Still A Fish

I made it back to Dallas just in time to go to a job interview. Don’t these people realize they are cutting into my precious poker time? The interview went fairly well, and I should know something by the end of the week. It will require working more hours than I wanted, but it’s the closest thing I’ve ever seen to one of my dream jobs. It only took me 20 minutes to get there, but that would increase dramatically if I had to go during rush hour. In Dallas/Fort Worth, a 20 minute commute is a rare thing.

After catching up on my reading, it seems like I missed a lot this weekend! I’m so jealous Pauly was there to see Doyle Brunson win his 10th bracelet. With every moment that passes, I get more and more excited about my trip to Vegas in October. I thought I might get lucky and catch the poker bloggers event while I was there, but it seems like they’ve decided to move it to December. December is too full of holidays, finals, and birthdays but hopefully, I can make it to the next mid-year event.

As for poker, I didn’t get to play any over the weekend since I was in Houston visiting my family, but I did manage to play some today between other forms of entertainment called “laundry” and “job interview.” I’ve been poking around in PT. With only 500 hands to go on, there are still some interesting things:

- A5s is a 100% winner for me, with a net of $5 per hand. Not too shabby, but I bet it is atypical.
- My biggest winners are still suited connecters, and would even be higher if my flopped two pair wouldn’t get rivered by donkeys hitting their gutshots. /grumble
- EP continues to be my money spot. Flopping a full house from the button and being called all the way to the river does help that stat though.

I still play way too many hands. It doesn’t feel like a lot, but that fish by my name tells me I’m wrong.

Ace-rag suited is a group 5 hand according to Sklansky. In a limit game, you’d play it from middle or late position so long as the pot was unraised. In NL, you’d only play it from late position, again only in an unraised pot, and in a sufficiently passive game where you’re not too worried about a raise behind you.

The problem with A-rag is that flopping an ace can be a big disaster, as you’ll often be out-kicked. Unless you flop two pair or a flush draw, you could be in a lot of trouble. If you’re going to play ace-rag (suited, of course, never play it unsuited), you have to be ready, willing, and able to fold it when an ace flops.

At least that’s what the books I’ve read say.

Sounds right to me. I’ve just been lucky and hit my flush or a straight with it several times. I haven’t had to show down just a pair of aces with it yet. Does that mean I’m getting respect?

    Nah, I didn’t think so!
