Railbirds Wanted

Is anybody around tonight? If so, stop by and say hello. I’m playing in the dollar buyin on Ultimate Bet. 929 entered, and the top 100 get paid. As of the first break, my stack of 16k was good for first place out of 418 remaining. The average stack was 3k. You might want to make it snappy - Historically, I run up a good stack and then blow it on a dumb move.

– Update –
As of the second break, I’m in 10th place out of 162. I have 21k, and the average stack is 8600. The last hand before the break, I saw a crazy suckout! Guy wound up taking first place in chips, knocking out two players and crippling the second place stack when he hit his straight on the river for a 42k pot.

– Update –
Save yourself the trouble. Things aren’t looking so good. Told you I’d mess it up.

– Update –
Well, oddly enough, I’m still hanging in there as of the third break. 30 players still in it. I’m in 8th place with 60k, and the average stack is 46k.

With my stack at 2205, and the 1k/2k blinds hitting me in the next hand, I push with QJo. I’m called in 4 places. The flop comes A-9-8 rainbow. The turn is a beautiful 10. A 9 on the river worried me a little bit, but when the cards were flipped, my straight was good. The very next hand, I’m dealt QQ in the BB. The hilton sisters never hold up for me, but I still pushed. A miracle - they beat down ATo and I doubled up.

– Update –
Well, I finished in 18th place when my queens ran into aces. IGHN (actually, I go to bed now).

Congrats! 18th out of 929 is pretty freakin’ good. How much didja win?

I’m going to AC this weekend. Thinkin’ I might try my hand at a tournament there.

A $1 buy-in tourney? You are a brave, brave person. I imagine those are just all-in crapshoots with a mixture of many tight-passive players. I think I’d rather take a shot at winning 4 $10 SnG’s than sit through that.

Beck - Thanks. I won about $6. Heh. First place paid like $200. I’m just not good enough yet to risk more money on higher buyins. I need to figure out how to increase the skill with minimal risk to my bankroll. I played in a live tournament with a $60 buyin a couple of weeks ago. I need to write it up. How far is the drive to AC for you?

Tom - LOL. I know. At first, I’d say each table has one all-in monkey. But once it was down to the money, every table was basically half push-monkeys. My skill isn’t quite up to 10 SNGs though. I’m working on it :)

  4. Tom says:

I do more cash games anyway, but I’ve found that there isn’t much difference in play from a $5 SnG to a $10 SnG. It’s mostly semi-passive players who wait until they think they have the nuts before betting. I’m on TigerGaming now, but I was planning on hitting UB next for whatever bonus they’re offering.

You should try some of the weekend freerolls at PokerRoom. First pays $100. You only need to get through 2400 maniacs. I think it is great experience. Then try the Lucky Dollar on Saturdays at PokerRoom as well. First is like $1500 (they add money to the pool).

Nice job still! Starting small and building up is the way to go.

  6. Jaxia says:

Tom - I’ve only played in one $10 SNG. It was the day I first made a deposit and didn’t really know what I was doing. How do you like Tiger? I’ve never played there. I think UB is one of the better sites.

StB - I don’t have a PokerRoom account, but that Lucky Dollar overlay is nice :)

You can’t beat experience for improving your poker skills, but I’d also recommend picking up a few books on the subject as well. What all have you read?

Not sure when I’ll get the chance, but I’ve been thinking of doing a post reviewing the poker books I’ve read. Hopefully that can prove helpful to novices out there.

Also, it’s not enough to just read a book once. Read, re-read, and re-re-read them until you know the material backwards and forwards. That is, of course, assuming your intent is to approach poker as a serious source of potential income. If your primary interest is relaxation and fun, then learning how to get ahead in the low-stakes games requires a lot less effort (and is a lot less like school/work) :)

He knows whereof he speaks. One book recommendation from Beck changed me from a chip-hemorrhaging loser to someone who’s profiting at micro-limit.

Paradise Poker is running a million-dollar freeroll, but good luck beating that.

Jax - Tiger Gaming is cool. They offer a first time deposit bonus of 100% up to something like $700. I did $200. They give you 45 days to accumulate these POP points … there’s a full explanation of them on their site. It’s harder than raked hands because you need to show down to get POP points, I think. Example - $40 pot with 3 people. No matter who wins, each person gets 40/3 POP points, or 13.33 whatever. For $200, I needed to get 2300 POP points. It’s easily attainable playing $25 NL tables.

As far as the players go, it’s a soft game at $25 NL. Sit n Go’s are soft, too. It’s mostly a cash game site. They run a couple small tournaments each day, but you’ll be lucky to find 50 entrants in some of them. They are re-buy tourneys, too, which I usually avoid.

I have no complaints about the layout or the software.

I’m not sure which books Beck has in mind, but I’d recommend Small Stakes Hold Em for limit ring game improvement, and I’d recommend Dan Harrington’s books on tournament play.

  10. Jaxia says:

Beck - I have Super System 2, which I have skimmed but not studied. I borrowed Theory of Poker and Low Limit Hold em, but I had to return them before I could really study them. Book reviews would be cool :)

Mike - Which book do you like?

Tom - Thanks for the info, and the book suggestions. I do need to pick up a book and study :) I bet the games would be even softer if I sat down!

Looks like my acronym replacer is having a problem in comments. Hrmm…

  11. Beck says:

Ask and ye shall receive. Beck’s books post is up and ready for comment.

Speaking of grinding and Micro limits. How does .01-.02 NL grab ya! Though as exciting as watching paint dry, it’s been putting almost 50 bucks in my pocket every other day. It takes me roughly 800 hands to make 25 bucks but it sure is a confidence builder. Also has taught me how to show restraint and maximise when I hit a monster. A friend of mine who I speak with regularly is playing 25 NL and $10 sng’s, riding the bankroll rollercoaster, and occasionally getting wiped on a single bad call. I’ve been down that road, and with a limited bankroll, there just isnt enough to make through sometimes. So instead, I have been grinding my ass off playing 3 $2 max buy in, 10 player ring games. I’ve found I can absorb just about anything bad luck has to offer at the Micro of all micro levels. I can do this stress free and actually joke around and enjoy myself and the game, at the same time guarantee winning session after session. I have sifted almost a thousand bucks out of these tables in the past 3 months. I swear! If it weren’t for the miracle flops and suckouts, I may be up twice that, but hell that’s what you get at those limits. - P.s. I don’t recommend doing this if you have a “real job” or a family. lol You have to put the time in and it comes out to about 5-10 bucks an hour, and that can be on the high side.
