I’m railbirding Mike in the WSOP 100 seat guarantee on Full Tilt. 3,050 people entered into the tournament and after a few minutes, we’ve already lost 20 people. With a buyin of $500 + $35 and 3K in starting chips, what were those people thinking?!
Mike is laggin pretty bad, and hasn’t had a hand worth playing yet. Good luck, Mike!
(I’m also railbirding CJ on PokerStars in his hunt for a WSOP seat! Scratch that. He’s out and I missed it.)
5:09p - (Times are central) - Blinds started at 15/30 and are already up to 20/40. Mike still hasn’t played a hand outside the blinds.
5:11p - Mike finally sees a flop with pocket 4’s. No love on the flop, and he gets out of the hand. 127 people win seats into the WSOP main event, and 128th place wins $1000.
5:20p - He calls a preflop raise with 55 on the button; the flop brings an OESD with 876 rainbow. Mike bets 250 into the 380 pot when it is checked around to him and takes it down. Chip count - 3115. Avg is 3130.
5:27p - Pocket aces in the small blind put him above average. Mike raises to 200, BB calls and limper folds. The flop is ten high, and Mike takes it down with his continuation bet.
5:36p - Mike takes down another small pot with A6c when an ace flops. Man, some of these players are really scary. One guy called a large raise with A2o. Ace flopped and he called another large bet. Hit running deuces for his boat. The initial raiser had AK. I bet he is steaming.
5:49p - Ah, watching chat can be highly entertaining. I love it when people blame the site for their lack of poker skills. With so much at stake, I cannot believe these people are going all in with K3s and QJo. I guess I’m not enough of a gambler!
6p - Going into the first break, there are 2392 people remaining and Mike is in 1054th place with T3580. The average chip stack is 3825 but some crazy (or lucky) fool has a staggering 15015 in chips! After the break, blinds will be 60/120.
6:05 - Mike here. Jax went to dinner. First hand on break is AQo UTG, I raise and take the blinds.
6:12 - AQo again, this time in the hijack. I smooth-call a raise, then bet when the preflop raiser checks to me.
6:13 - next hand: 99, and I smooth call a raise from the idiot two seats to my right. Flop is J-high and he leads; he’s a pretty weak player so the bet tells me 99 is no good and I muck.
6:15 - 97 diamonds in the BB, and I get a free flop: AA7. It’s checked around, and on the turn I make a probe bet. Everyone folds.
6:17 - AQo again, this time on the button. UTG limps, folded to me, I make it 4x, but the big blind shoves. The limper and I both fold.
6:21 - AA, second to act. I raise and a super-shorty calls with only 45 chips. Everyone folds. Shorty has AK of clubs and I hold up.
6:27 - KQ diamonds, I raise to a little more than 3x and get called. I make a move with a flush draw and two overs. Called by QJs who flopped top pair with his J and I can’t hit. IGHN, in 2025th place. I don’t know whether the play is ballsy or just stupid.
Thanks for the well wishes, all. It was fun while it lasted.

6 pm (ET) tonight. I’d like to liveblog it, but I want to devote total focus to the tournament. So, Jax or Beck, if you’re around, shoot me an e-mail and we can set it up.
Getting there was no picnic. I qualified very early this morning (and I mean very early this morning) via a $69 + $6 satellite that sent the top 6 players to today’s event and paid $240 for 7th. With 8 left, I was in 4th place, having been knocked off the chip lead when a shortstack doubled through me. With 75-chip antes and blinds at 300/600, I found AK under the gun and raised to 1,735, which was the precise amount the shortest stack had left. This plan backfired when the chipleader called from the cutoff.
The flop came A62 with two clubs. I led out with a pot-sized bet, saying ATTENTION MORON: I HAVE ACE-KING. Unfortunately, though, something got lost in translation, because he put me all-in.
Damn it.
It would be a cardinal sin of satellite tournaments if I got knocked out on the bubble because I messed around with the chipleader from a position where I could probably have just folded my way to a seat. But my big pot-sized flop bet left me virtually committed, with a little more than 3800 chips behind. More good news was that since I was under the gun, I’d be facing the blinds, and it had just been announced that they’d be going up to 400/800 next hand. So folding would have left me in a bit of a spot, in 7th place and on the ropes for qualifying.
But what was this guy pushing with? Given the circumstances, a flush draw is almost certainly out. I don’t think he calls preflop with A6 or A2, so rule out two pair. AA probably reraises before the flop, so a set of aces is out. 66 or 22 are probable candidates, as is another AK. And if he has top pair with a smaller kicker, I’m crushing him.
I’ve been in my fair share of satellites as a short stack on the bubble. It’s not fun. I’d rather make my stand here. If you have a set, mazel tov to you. I call.
He had AJ. I took most of his chips. He busted out on the next hand when he ran 99 into JJ. Then I busted the short stack by winning the race with 33 against KJ.
You know what? I’ll take another heart-attack hand like this if it gets me to Vegas. Sweat me starting at 6 pm.

After a mere 19 hours, the World Series of Poker $50,000 buyin HORSE event is at the final table. Here are the players:
Doyle Brunson
Phil Ivey
Andy Bloch
Dewey Tomko
Chip Reese
Jim Bechtel
David Singer
T.J. Cloutier
Patrik Antonius
Personally, I’d love to see Doyle win another bracelet. If Texas Dolly can’t pull it out, I’d be happy to see Phil Ivey atop the WSOP food chain.
